ZF at NUFAM 2025: Innovative Trailer Technologies for Greater Efficiency, Safety and Digitalization

“With ZF’s broad range of innovative products and solutions, we are a trusted partner for trailer manufacturers and fleets. At the same time, our comprehensive truck-trailer expertise shows how important it is that truck and trailer systems are fully compatible. Our technologies provide the industry with unique solutions for safe, intelligent, efficient and sustainable goods transport,” says Christiaan Verschueren, Vice President Trailer Solutions at ZF.

Decarbonization with TrailTrax

As tractor units have already achieved high levels of efficiency and CO2 reduction, future regulations can trigger the next step: ZF’s e-trailer solution, TrailTrax, integrates ZF’s in-house 210 kW AxTrax 2 electric axle, trailer EBS, battery box and a control unit into a complete system within the trailer. Customers benefit from additional electric drive support and the ability to recover braking energy. Combined with a combustion-powered truck, it achieves up to 16% CO2 reduction, and up to 40% with a plug-in solution. ZF is working with leading trailer manufacturers such as Kässbohrer and Krone to further develop the technology, who have already showcased the system.

Safety Solution: iEBS

ZF’s intelligent electronic braking system iEBS is suitable for all types of trailers. It enhances safety and efficiency by combining ABS and EBS systems while enabling new functionalities. iEBS is part of ZF’s global Intelligent Braking Platform for trailer brake systems. It is available in various configurations to meet market needs – for conventional and air suspension systems in Basic, Standard and Premium versions. Additional benefits include fast installation, simplified maintenance and streamlined inventory for trailer manufacturers and workshops, improving operational efficiency and fleet uptime. Over 40 additional functions, enabled by integrating trailer brake systems, sensors and electronic chassis control programs, help enhance the overall safety and comfort of truck-trailer combinations in everyday transport.

Digital Solution: SUMS

With its Software Update Management System (SUMS), ZF CVS has launched a new comprehensive digital solution designed for trailer manufacturers. SUMS enables trailer manufacturers to maintain compliance with international standards for software updates in the automotive industry. Based on UNECE Regulation R156, manufacturers are required to implement a SUMS to ensure functional safety and cybersecurity throughout the lifecycle of a vehicle. ZF’s SUMS Service Suite enables trailer manufacturers to meet these requirements while offering a complete end-to-end support toolkit.
