Premiere at the SMM 2018: ZF Unveils new ZF 8000 Transmission Series

  • Brand-new marine transmission family suitable for a wide range of applications.
  • High degree of variability for manufacturers and fleet operators thanks to a modular design
  • Hybrid compatibility allows for local zero-emission propulsion

Hamburg/Friedrichshafen. With the ZF 8000 model range, ZF Friedrichshafen AG presents a brand-new marine transmission family for outputs up to a maximum of 3,000 kW. ZF offers this family in multiple transmission ratios, housing sizes and variants giving manufacturers a high degree of flexibility for new build projects and retrofits. In this manner, the ZF 8000 covers a wide-ranging field of application, from coast guard vessels and yachts to ferries, supply ships and small tankers. An additional power take-in makes it possible to integrate an electric motor for hybrid functions. During the development of the new transmission, ZF benefited from decades of experience as a specialist in marine propulsion technology.

Premiere at the SMM 2018: ZF Unveils new ZF 8000 Transmission Series

With numerous improvements, the new ZF 8000 marine transmission family fulfills the current requirements of international classification societies – and is furthermore prepared to face future regulations. Convincing arguments for the advanced transmission include a higher power density, more robust housing and an optimized power-to-weight ratio. A large offering of possible power take-offs covers a wide variety of customer-specific requirements. Thanks to an optional sub-shaft, the ZF 8000 can be coupled with an electric drive. This lets vessels maneuver with zero fuel and emissions.

The modular, compact design of the transmission saves installation space and weight and also allows for a flexible installation in the ship’s hull. Both a parallel installation with a vertical offset and a down-angle concept are available. The same goes for U or V configurations. Shipyards and design engineers can now experience greater freedom when designing new vessels and fleet operators have more freedom when retrofitting their fleet. Since the ZF 8000 series covers outputs up to a maximum of 3,000 kW, it can power a large number of ship types from coast guards vessels and ferries, to motor yachts, and even up to smaller tankers.

Many options, initial customer feedback

With its new model family, ZF integrates an electric control unit ex works. In addition, the company is able to deliver the ZF 8000 together with a flexible coupling, electronic pump, control unit and digital status monitoring in the future.

Thanks to the proven concept of the transmission family platforms, many components can be shared in the different variants. This optimizes warehousing for necessary replacement parts. This ensures ZF´s customary safe and fast replacement part supply for the new transmission family.

Series prototypes are planned for the first quarter of 2019.
