High velocity, flexibility, reliability, comfort, cost-effectiveness, economy and safety – these are the essential characteristics of the new ZF spur gear drives for high-speed trains. A train equipped with the powerful single-stage gearbox, which has undergone all testing and is already in service, can drive at up to 380 kilometers per hour. A modular structure not only makes installation easier, but also enables designs that allow maximum speeds of up to 600 kilometers per hour.

The average speed for trains is constantly increasing, which leads to stricter requirements for train drives that are state of the art in terms of safety, comfort and cost-effectiveness. At speeds of above 250 kilometers per hour, the materials are subjected to extreme loads. The new high-speed gearbox is especially suited for high-speed applications. What's more, this new transmission has been designed with future train generations in mind, with a modular design that allows for flexible adaptation to specific customer requirements.

One housing for multiple transmission versions

The advantage of this approach is that train operators can use just one gearbox type for different axle spacings and gear ratios in their rolling stock fleet. All gearbox versions for maximum speeds of 250 to 600 kilometers per hour can be accommodated in the same housing. This modular design also means that the gearbox can be adapted to specific customer applications more quickly, with shorter lead times for ready-to-use prototypes.

Robust and cost-effective

Throughout the development of the new gearbox, a great deal of attention was paid to comfort and cost-effectiveness. The high-precision gearwheel technology ensures particularly quiet running, even at very high speeds. State-of-the-art production technologies increase the durability of individual components so that there is no need to interrupt the prescribed maintenance cycles despite the heavy mechanical loading.
