The new TraXon automatic transmission system can also be used for heavy-load applications with a gross vehicle weight of over 70 tons. ZF's development TraXon Torque is particularly suitable for this kind of applications - especially mobile cranes, special vehicles, and heavy goods transporters. For this TraXon variant, the basic transmission is combined with a torque converter clutch as starting component. Setting off and maneuvering is comfortable even when very high input torques are transmitted, without jerking or wear – thanks to the hydrodynamic torque converter. An integrated secondary retarder, which is also wear-free, supports the braking process.
According to its tried and tested concept, TraXon Torque implements high input torques directly, powerfully and gently through its torque converter clutch. Thanks to its design, this perfectly harmonized system provides immediate full drive power from a single source.
In case of the TraXon Torque, a hydrodynamic torque converter, a torque converter lock-up clutch, and a dry clutch are installed upstream of the transmission. Vehicles can utilize the 1.58-fold torque increase of the converter in challenging situations, both off-road or on hills. By opening the torque converter lock-up clutch, downshifts on hills and speed loss can be avoided. In addition to this, the driver can select a higher start gear when setting off on steep hills, in order to drive uphill faster. Once in motion, the TraXon system automatically bypasses the torque converter and efficiently transfers the engine power. As soon as the setting-off process has been completed, the torque converter lock-up clutch closes so that the relatively fuel-intensive driving "in torque converter slip" is over. That way, the driving power can be transferred to the transmission with hardly any loss. The dry clutch opens the driveline temporarily for further gear changes during the journey.
The transmission is equipped with a powerful secondary retarder with a braking torque of 4,000 Nm, the ZF-Intarder. The latter offers enormous advantages compared to other primary retarder systems particularly for brake operations at speeds higher than 25 km/h. It can be combined perfectly with the latest generation of engine brake systems with increased braking force. This allows wear-free auxiliary brakes to be used efficiently across the entire speed range.
A new peripheral and control unit concept was selected for the further development of the torque converter clutch (TCHD module). Thanks to a shared on-site control unit for Intarder and TCHD, the system was considerably improved and designed with a view to the future. The advantages gained this way are less complex control units, reduced wiring, and the application of a new control unit generation.
Another distinct feature of the TraXon Torque is the possibility of maneuvering in open converter operation. A powerful pump for the supply of the hydraulic control unit and the oil circuit as well as a suitably designed cooling unit make sure that the temperature almost never reaches the critical threshold of 130 degrees Celsius. Moreover, the module does not require an additional external oil tank. Upon request, the tank can be filled with 26.5 liters of the Ecofluid M oil which was also developed by ZF. This makes the final oil fill easier. Apart from that, higher mileages can be achieved by using Ecofluid M and the oil change intervals are extended, which leads to higher efficiency in service.
