Midibuses and the modular A/AV 110 rear axle model range by ZF designed for their particular needs have many things in common – like compact dimensions, low weight, and a remarkable agility. Especially the new axle provides special comfort, flexible configuration options, high cost-effectiveness as well as an application range covering city, intercity, and long-distance traffic. Thus, it is the ideal system partner for the advanced RL 55 EC independent suspension for low-floor front axles.
"The A 110 and AV 110 constitute a completely new rear axle system that efficiently expands our existing midibus portfolio by the 19.5 inch wheel connection for full low-floor buses," explains Andreas Moser, Senior Vice President of Axle & Transmission Systems for Buses & Coaches at ZF Friedrichshafen AG. "Together with the RL 55 EC independent front suspension, we can now offer a complete chassis package for this segment. Furthermore, manufacturers always get the corresponding transmission configuration from ZF – and thus even more products that perfectly match each other." ZF already acquired the first customer for this advanced rear axle: The manufacturer Liaz is equipping its midibus model 4292 with the AV 110.
The small model range A/AV 110 encompasses all benefits and technologies well known from the company's larger model ranges. Thanks to the modular system structure, commercial vehicle manufacturers obtain the flexibility to cover the whole midibus axle range – with regard to dimensions, OEM specifics, and application in city, intercity, or long-distance traffic.
Especially the small ZF axle model range is compact and weighs no more than 737 kg. It is offered as A 110 hypoid direct drive axle for midi coaches and as AV 110 full low-floor portal axle with double reduction for city and school buses. Apart from that, the ZF innovation covering a total ratio from 2.6 to 5.2 (A 110) and 4.02 to 7.71 (AV 110) has proven to be very robust: It can handle 200 kW midibus engines just as well as 11.5 tons of axle load. Both axle variants provide an output torque on the wheels of maximally 35 000 Nm. Thanks to the axle drive the A/AV 110 system works almost completely silently: The ZF engineers focused in particular on optimizing the noise emissions as well as on a generally high wheelset quality which also contributes to the excellent axle efficiency.
Special features of the AV 110 axle are the 19.5 inch wheel connection for full low-floor buses as well as the axial brake which is also provided optionally with a deflection housing. The portal drive offers a wide range of input angle options. Its power-split gear chain ensures high performance and load capacity. The optional axle breather system with oil and water-repellent filter membrane which can be applied independent from the respective OEM is also new and was designed in particular for the AV 110.
