SCHWEINFURT – Kart drivers, wishing to make the move into car racing, have access to an attractive new international platform since 2014: The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile FIA created Formula 4, which is tailored to suit the budgets of young racing drivers. The French monoposto specialist Mygale provides a rolling chassis for 33,000 Euro (without Motor and plus VAT). ZF is committed to the future-looking project and supplies high-quality shock absorbers for the near 150 hp racecars.
High-quality technology at manageable cost – Formula 4 already competes with this philosophy in Australia, China, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and Northern Europe. Other championships in Europe, America and Asia are planned. The goal is to be able to assess the qualities of budding young talents on this platform and to simultaneously prevent costs escalating, which is usually the result of a technical competition and personnel intensive support.
The mono-tube gas filled shock absorbers are designed specifically for Formula 4 and are not based on any of the company’s other damper models. A robust and durable steel tube encloses a 36-millimetre piston, which is controlled by a 14-millimetre diameter piston rod. The module is designed as so-called eye-to-eye damper, which means that both sides of the damper are mounted to the suspension and chassis using play-free spherical bearings. Chassis manufacturer Mygale
Formula 4 omits using adjustable dampers for cost reasons and uses standardised damping characteristics instead. Only the ride-height can be adjusted using a ball joint. Dampers and springs are coil-over design and adopt a Formula 3 style layout. As a result, teams have the opportunity to select inexpensive suspension springs from existing suppliers.
To prevent costly competition, the dampers are homologated specifically for the respective chassis. ZF is linked to Mygale through an exclusive partnership that started in September 2014. ZF also promotes commercial considerations in Formula 4 in the form of component lifetime. If there is no misuse in racing, one service annually is sufficient for the dampers to allow them to be used for another year. ZF and its solutions make an active contribution to leveling the path for young motorsport talents on their way to a professional career, which often leads to Formula 1.
