Miami. Mag Bay Yacht’s new 42 Express Sportfish, is making its world debut at the Miami International Boat Show. ZF a supplier and global leader in the design and development of propulsion system solutions for all vessel types is the propulsion system supplier to this all-new vessel, bringing its new 400 series transmission, SmartCommand controls including Joystick Manoeuvring System (JMS) with iAnchor/iDrift, as well as ZF high performance Fish Master propellers.
Mag Bay Yachts was launched in 2014 by Barrett Howarth and his father, Mike Howarth, co-founder of well-known fishing boat brand, Cabo Yachts. After Cabo was sold to the Brunswick Corporation, the Howarths created Mag Bay as its own brand and built the 33’ Center Console. The new Mag Bay 42, debuting at the 2020 Miami International Boat Show, demonstrates the company’s commitment to build a dedicated fishing boat that is faster, more agile, and with more range and fishing amenities.
Mag Bay approached ZF Marine for help in planning the propulsion for the new 42 Express. ZF’s newest marine transmission, the 400A, was the right choice for the 1000hp engines on board.
The new transmission features integrated Supershift2 technology with an optional embedded electronic control unit for even smoother shifting/trolling.
Controlling all that horsepower is ZF Marine’s SmartCommand control system. This long-standing platform has been a “go to” for sportfishing applications. Features such as EasiDock and AutoTroll give captains optimum gear engagement and precise propeller speed when maneuvering or trolling.
The new Mag Bay 42 also features ZF’s JMS (Joystick Maneuvering System), combining both main engines with the bow thruster to put complete control for docking, station keeping, and slow speed maneuvering right at your fingertips. For the hardcore angler, ZF’s optional iAnchor/iDrift feature is also included. iAnchor allows for station-keeping within as little as 3 feet from a marked position. For drift fishing, iDrift offers the ability to drift freely with the current or at a controlled speed while maintaining a heading.
For putting the power to the water, Mag Bay again selected ZF, for propellers. ZF high performance Fish Master propellers were designed specifically for the Mag Bay 42 to optimize performance and efficiency. Each propeller from ZF is serialized so a new propeller can be cast and machined to the exact required specification in the event a replacement is needed.
Finally, ZF technology partner Siren Marine outfitted the new Mag Bay 42 with its industry leading Connected Boat technology. Siren’s industry leading technology allows the operator to monitor critical vessel systems and physical location through a smartphone app. By utilizing the ZF tile in the Siren app, operators can monitor operating hours, transmission temperature and pressure, required scheduled maintenance, and have direct access to factory support from ZF: www.sirenmarine.com
“This is a great partnership with ZF”, said Barrett Howarth, Vice President of Mag Bay Yachts. ZF was a solid partner for us back with Cabo, and it only made sense to partner with them again on this new 42. I think our customers are really going to like the performance and feel of these new transmissions and the SmartCommand controls. Additionally, features like AutoTroll and iDrift are going to make the fishing experience all that much better,” Barratt continued.
“We are delighted to be involved in the Mag Bay 42 project. The Howarth family has a long history of building great sportfishing yachts and we’re excited that the 42 will debut with ZF’s newest 400 series transmission with Supershift2 technology. The SmartCommand controls, including JMS/iAnchor/iDrift and the high-performance Fish Master propellers are really going to make this boat a top performer,” said Keith Stanley ZF Marine’s Pleasure Craft Product Line Manager for North America.
The new Mag Bay 42 will be on display at in-water docks 782 and 782A at the Miami International Boat Show on Key Biscayne, Feb13-17.
