ZF’s TraXon 2 with Intarder Debuts in HINO’s New S’elega Coach in Japan

Friedrichshafen, Germany. ZF’s latest-generation TraXon 2 automated manual transmission (AMT), combined with the integrated Intarder, is now available on HINO’s new S’elega premium coach in Japan. ZF also supplies braking and suspension technologies as well as components supporting advanced driver assistance systems. This business success strengthens ZF’s position in Japan’s commercial vehicle market and demonstrates its ability to leverage its broad product portfolio to address regional market needs.

ZF’s TraXon 2 with Intarder Debuts in HINO’s New S’elega Coach in Japan

Introduced in 2026, the new S’elega is the latest generation of HINO’s premium touring coach and marks the first HINO application of ZF’s TraXon 2 Coach solution, which is designed to support smooth and efficient vehicle operation while contributing to driving comfort and safety in long-distance passenger transportation.

The project also represents an important expansion of ZF’s long-standing collaboration with HINO, extending their successful partnership from the truck segment into the premium coach segment.

Advanced transmission technology for a new generation of mobility

With more than 1.5 million systems sold globally, TraXon has established itself as one of ZF's most successful AMTs for demanding commercial vehicle applications. Building on this proven platform, TraXon 2 represents the latest generation of the AMT family for heavy-duty trucks and coaches.

The 12-speed AMT features an in-house developed ECU and shift actuators that enable optimized gear selection and precise shifting performance. The resulting smoother acceleration contributes to a premium ride experience for drivers and passengers.

Equipped with a next-generation microprocessor and an integrated security module, TraXon 2 combines increased computing power with enhanced cybersecurity capabilities. A comprehensive software package and brake interaction functions, further supports transmission performance and efficiency. Depending on the application and operating conditions, ZF estimates that TraXon 2 can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 1.7 percent compared with the former TraXon generation.

For coach applications, TraXon 2 can be combined with ZF’s Intarder, a hydrodynamic retarder integrated into the transmission. Designed for applications with limited installation space, it provides powerful, wear-free auxiliary braking independently of engine speed and supports stable deceleration on long downhill sections and during highway operation. By reducing the use of the service brakes by up to 90 percent, the Intarder can help extend service intervals, lower maintenance costs and reduce brake dust emissions.

Comprehensive ZF technologies enhance safety, stability and comfort

Beyond the driveline, the new HINO S’elega is equipped with additional ZF technologies, highlighting the company’s comprehensive systems expertise and contributing to vehicle stability and ride comfort. These include ZF braking and suspension technologies such as Electronic Braking System (EBS), Continuous Damping Control (CDC) with Electronic Shock Absorber Control (ESAC), and OptiRide Electronically Controlled Air Suspension (ECAS).

ZF also contributes to the vehicle’s advanced driver assistance systems. The new HINO S’elega uses ZF short-range radar sensors to support functions including Blind Spot Information System, Blind Spot Warning Detection and Front Cross Traffic Alert. These functions help enhance safety for passengers, drivers and other road users.

This project reflects ZF’s ability to deliver globally competitive solutions tailored to local customer requirements. It also reinforces ZF’s strategy of combining innovation leadership with deep commercial vehicle expertise to shape the future of safe, efficient and sustainable mobility.

Through J-Bus, the joint venture between HINO and ISUZU, ZF’s commercial vehicle technologies used in the new HINO S’elega are also applied in the ISUZU Gala.
